Low Income Housing In Charlotte, North Carolina

Charlotte Low Income HousingCharlotte's Housing Authority offers two types of public housing assistance voucher programs for low income families.  The Choice Voucher rental program, also known as HUD Section 8 Housing, provides affordable rental housing for qualifying low-income families.  The Project-based Voucher program offers affordable housing for low-income homebuyers with multi-level qualifications based on household incomes at or below 30%, 50% and 80% of Charlotte's area  median income (AMI).

These programs are available to families, the elderly and the disabled.  Through HUD Hope VI grants, Charlotte can also offer financial assistance for downpayment and closing costs for low-income families who qualify.

In addition, the Resident Opportunities and Self Sufficiency (ROSS) grant program, funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), gives low-income homeowners counseling and education on the homebuying process, including budgeting, home maintenance and even the loan application.

Charlotte's goal is to provide what is known as mixed-income housing, locating low-income housing within higher-income neighborhoods.  To accomplish this, the City offers incentives not only to low-income tenants and homebuyers but also to nonprofit developers who build and sell the properties and to local and state governments who support these housing efforts.
