Low Income Housing In Columbus, Ohio

Columbus Low Income HousingThe city of Columbus receives federal funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to create low income housing for low- and moderate-income families.  Under the direction of the Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority, Columbus offers  the Housing Choice Voucher program (HUD Section 8 Housing) that helps low-income families, elderly and the disabled to find affordable homes.  Income limits are divided into three categories: low income, very low Income, and priority income limits - based on family size.  Program descriptions, qualifications and how to apply can be found at www.cmhanet.com

There is also the Section 8 Homeownership Program, or Family Self-Sufficiency Program, for first-time homebuyers who earn at least $10,300 a year and have $3000 in a personal saving account.  The homeowner must pay a downpayment of 3% of the purchase price with 1% coming from their own personal savings.  The mortgage assistance program continues for 15 years of a 20 year mortgage.

Columbus also has a Home Safe and Sound Program for low-income families whose income does not exceed Columbus' area median income (AMI) that allows eligible homeowners to receive 3% loans or 0% deferred loans for home repairs.  The objective is to give these homeowners an opportunity to remain in their homes and live independently and safely.  The money can be used for such repairs as removing pest infestation, adding insulation, building handicap ramps, and installing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

A similar program, called the Home Modification Program, focuses on financial assistance for the handicapped who require physical alterations such as handrails, ramps and stair lifts.  This assistance is offered to both homeowners as well as those who rent.  The same HUD income guidelines of 80% of AMI apply.
