Low Income Housing In Houston, Texas

Houston Low Income HousingHouston's Housing and Community Development Department has a number of programs that help families find low income housing and includes affordable rental properties, home repair programs and three different downpayment assistance programs for qualifying Houston residents wanting to purchase their own home. 

The Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS (HOPWA) program helps residents with a HIV positive diagnosis and household incomes not exceeding 80% of Houston's area median income (AMI).  This program includes Short-Term Rent, Mortgage, Utility (STRMU) services  for up to 21 out of 52 weeks, Tenant Based Rental Assistance (TBRA) that pays rent or utilities for 12-24 months, and other counseling and support services.  More details are available at www.houstontx.gov/housing/hopwa

Through the Housing Resource Center, three downpayment assistance programs are available for low income applicants. The Homebuyer Assistance Program provides $19,500 in financial assistance for any qualifying family who wants to purchase a home within the city's incorporated limits.

The Houston Hope Program is available to teachers, police officers, firemen, and EMS personnel and offers $30,000 in financial assistance to qualifying families who want to purchase a home in revitalized areas of the city.  Qualifying income for these two programs cannot exceed 80% of the area median income (AMI).  The Workforce Housing Program is for residents whose income does not exceed 80-110% of AMI and provides up to $30,000 for downpayment, closing costs and prepaid items to purchase newly-constructed homes in Houston's revitalized areas.  Each program also requires buyers to live in the homes for at least ten years.
