Low Income Housing In Memphis, Tennessee

Memphis Low Income HousingFederal funding through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has allowed the city of Memphis to revitalize six key neighborhoods to provide affordable housing for its low-income residents.  The grant money is part of the city's Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) which is managed by the Division of Housing and Community Development.

Another HUD program that benefits low-income Memphis residents is the Family Self-Sufficiency program (FSS).  HUD believes it is not enough just to provide low income housing assistance, but also teach families how to increase their income and eventually become self sufficient. Therefore, the program includes education, job training and placement services as well.

Similarly, HUD's Resident Opportunities and Self Sufficiency program provides grant money not only to city public housing authorities  but also to resident associations and non-profit organizations who can use the money to provide affordable housing options for low-income families, elderly, and the disabled.  This creates a stronger effort throughout the Memphis community to support affordable housing for more residents.    In addition, HUD funding allows Memphis to offer homeownership assistance through  the Housing and Community Development Department.

Memphis also has a Health, Educational and Housing Facility Board that administers the Affordable Multi-family Housing Payment program providing  tax relief for low-income renters.  Funds are raised by issuing tax-exempt revenue bonds used to develop and rehabilitate multi-family facilities for low- and moderate-income families, the elderly and disabled persons.

Information on these and other affordable home programs can be found at www.cityofmemphis.org.
