Low Income Housing In Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Milwaukee Low Income HousingMilwaukee provides subsidized housing for low-income families in two general categories.  The first category is designated as general occupancy for families.  The second category has three tiers:  elderly occupants (62 years or older), disabled, and near elderly (50-61).  Income limits in the second category is $39,850 (1 person) and $45,550 (2 persons) with qualifying individuals or families paying only 30% of their income towards rent.

This program is managed by the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee.  Moderate-income housing is also available for families whose income does not exceed $21,600, $27,168 or $31,632, based on a 1- 2- or 3-bedroom unit.  This type of housing is privately-owned and is not federally subsidized. 

Milwaukee also has a Section 8 Homeownership program.  Residents who are currently receiving subsidized housing from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Section 8 program can apply the subsidized portion of their rent towards the purchase of their home for a period of up to 15 years.  To qualify, a resident must have income at or below 80% of the area median income, have income of at least $15,000 per year, and be a first-time homebuyer.
