Low Income Housing In New Haven, Connecticut

New Haven Low Income HousingAlthough New Haven is a relatively small city located within a small state, there is a great need for affordable and low income housing. Because of that, since 1986, Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven has been dedicated to the elimination of poverty housing through the creation of homeownership opportunities for needy working families. They build and rehabilitate low income housing in the Greater New Haven area with the goal of creating safe, decent, affordable houses that add to the revitalization of the city's neighborhoods.

They serve families who earn 30-60 percent of area median income, and who would have no other way to own a home of their own. They are the only non-profit housing developer who takes into account a family’s current living situation when selecting families for its program. Habitat seeks to lift families out of substandard, overly expensive or overcrowded conditions. For more details about this program, visit www.habitatgnh.org

There is also a foundation in the New Haven area called NeighborWorks® New Horizons (NWNH). Established in 1992 as the Mutual Housing Association of South Central CT, their mission is to improve the critically short supply of housing available to low-to-moderate income households in the New Haven Region. In 2008, they expanded into New London County to provide affordable housing solutions for families, towns and cities in Southeastern Connecticut. The homes are available to rent or to buy.
