Low Income Housing In Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina

Raleigh-Durham Low Income HousingRaleigh-Durham North Carolina is listed by the National Association of Realtors (NAR) as being one of the most affordable metro cities in which to live.  Their median home price is below the national median of $188,800. With more than 40% of the population at extremely low income levels, the Durham Housing Authority (DHA) works to provide more affordable housing options.

Very low-income families can apply for subsidized rent assistance through DHA's Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program.  Based on family size and income level, families pay 30-40% of their household income towards rent.  The rest is paid from DHA to landlords with funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).  In addition, a similar program is offered via public housing for low- and moderate-income families.  These properties are owned and managed by DHA and operate under guidelines similar to Section 8.

The federal (HUD) Choice Neighborhoods Planning Grant funds neighborhood revitalization programs and allows low-income residents the opportunity to purchase a rehabilitated home.  The DHA manages four developments that offer affordable housing options for residents with incomes as low as $5,301 under the Housing Opportunities for People Everywhere (HOPE VI) program.  More information on  DHA's affordable and low income housing options is available at www.durhamhousingauthority.org

Habitat for Humanity, an international non-profit organization, offers another great opportunity for low-income families to buy a home and pay only 30% of their household income toward a mortgage payment.  The unique feature of this program is that families actually help build their home, but the benefits are worth it in the form of a 0% interest mortgage.  For more information on qualifications and application process, visit www.habitatwake.org
