Low Income Housing In Richmond, Virginia

Through its Housing Operations Department, the city of Richmond has an agency called the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority (RRHA) that manages and maintains many low income housing developments for families in need.

In addition, they have developments for the low-income elderly and the disabled, and a number of scattered-site single-family homes and special housing units throughout the city of Richmond. In addition, the Housing Choice Voucher Program (formally Section 8) Housing Assistance Program provides rental assistance to private-market landlords on behalf of eligible families.

Such public housing is only available to low income families and individuals who are eligible based on their annual gross income; whether or not they qualify as elderly, a person with a disability, or as a family; and whether or not they have U.S. citizenship or eligible immigration status.

If they are eligible, the authority will check their references to make sure that they will be good tenants. The authority will deny admission to any applicant whose habits and practices may be expected to have a detrimental effect on other tenants or on the public housing community's environment. Once approved, the family or individual may typically stay as long as they comply with the lease.
