Low Income Housing In Seattle, Washington

Seattle Low Income HousingAnexcellent resource for families to find affordable and low income housing in the Seattle area is the Low-Income Housing Institute (LIHI).  For families making only 30% of the area median income, this is good news because 80% of LIHI properties are reserved for this income group.  Tenants pay either 30% of their household income towards rent, or a fixed rent.  See details and contact information at www.lihi.org

Seattle Housing Authority (SHA) has also helped more than 26,000 Seattle residents find affordable housing through its programs.  They include SHA-owned public housing for residents with income of 80% or less of area median income who are only required to pay 30% of their income on rent.

Federal funding through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) pays the rest.  Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program functions much the same way.  The difference is that the properties are privately-owned, offering more affordable housing options for low-income families.  Four rent payment options are available to people 62 and older under the Seattle Senior Housing Program.  This low income housing program is also available to the disabled.  More information can be found at www.seattlehousing.org

Habitat for Humanity is an international non-profit organization that builds affordable homes for low-income families.  This is possible through donations of money, time and materials from area donors.  In Seattle, efforts to raise more money include large fundraising programs including the Buy and Sell on eBay program.  Incomes must be 25-60% of Seattle/King County area median income, buyers must be first-time homebuyers, and they must agree to spend 250 hours per adult on the actual building process.  In return, they receive an affordable home at 0% interest with no down payment.  See how you can qualify for this opportunity at www.seattle-habitat.org.
