Low Income Housing In Washington, DC

Washington DC Low Income HousingIf you live in the Washington D.C. area, finding affordable and low income housing can be a daunting task for needy residents in this large metro city.  However, the City has a Department of Housing and Community Development with a website providing a wealth of information for local residents.  Residents can select an area and price range and find affordable rental or for-sale homes.

The Residential and Community Services division manages financial assistance to first-time homebuyers.  The Home Purchase Assistance Program provides up to $40,000 financial assistance, another $4,000 for closing costs, and  40-year mortgages with the first five years at 0% interest for qualifying first-time homebuyers.

Government employees can qualify for employer-matched downpayment funds up to $1,500 and a deferred loan up to $10,000.  For first-time homebuyers wanting to tackle rehabilitating a home, purchase assistance is available from $5,000-35,000. This is called the Home Purchase Rehabilitation Pilot Program.  More information on these programs are available at www.dhcd.dc.gov.

Another option for low-income residents to own their own home is available through Habitat for Humanity.  This international non-profit organization has been able to build 300 homes for low-income families in the D.C. area since 1988. Donations make it possible to build and sell these homes at less than market prices.   It's a different concept in homeownership in that first-time homebuyers receive a 0% interest home mortgage with no down payment if they meet the income guidelines and also work as a team with Habitat volunteers to build their home.  Income guidelines and instructions on how to apply can be found at www.dchabitat.org.
